From the archive. This one already lives on someone else’s pressing table. The top is spalted maple end to end — ink lines wandering through a soft curl — and walking across it, between two thin walnut bands, is a ladybug pieced from wood: red wings split down the middle, dark head, spots, and antennae, all inlaid flush and sanded as one surface. It reads like an appliqué block that happens to be made of hardwood.

Like every clapper from this bench it was built to work, not just to sit pretty: sanded to 320 grit, edges eased so they never mark fabric, sole left bare to drink the steam out of a seam while the wood’s mass holds it flat.
